What moves the price most

  • Door type. Frameless glass roughly doubles the framed price on hardware and glass thickness alone.
  • Glass width. Above a 36-inch opening, wider glass adds about $3 per inch.
  • Custom cuts. Out-of-square or oversized openings need measured glass — $200 or more, non-returnable.
  • Prep work. Rotted jambs, missing curb, or wall repairs surface at removal time.
  • Regional labor rates. The same install runs −10% in the Midwest to +18% in the Northeast.

FAQ

Shower door questions

How much does it cost to install a shower door?

A framed or semi-frameless door runs $470–$910 installed at BathCalc’s 2026 model rates; frameless glass runs $1,000–$1,400 depending on width and hardware.

Are frameless shower doors worth it?

They cost about double but last longer, clean easier, and read as a luxury feature. Most worthwhile in primary baths and updated tiled showers.

How long does installation take?

Framed and semi-frameless doors go in within 2–4 hours. Frameless needs a measurement visit plus 1–2 weeks fabrication, then a 2–3 hour install.

What glass thickness do shower doors use?

Framed doors use thin tempered glass in a metal frame. Frameless doors use 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch tempered glass with heavy hinges.

Can I install a shower door myself?

Framed kits are a confident-DIY job. Frameless glass is not: panels are heavy, holes must be drilled into finished tile, and mis-measured glass can't be returned.

Does a custom shower opening cost more?

Yes — openings over 60 inches or out-of-square walls need custom glass, adding $200 or more over standard sizes.

Data

How we price these estimates

Midpoint = door-type base + $3 per inch above 36 inches + selected options, then multiplied by the regional factor. Bases are $480 framed, $700 semi-frameless or $1,100 frameless. Custom fitting adds $200; removal and haul-away add $150.

These are BathCalc model assumptions, not a survey of contractor bids. The range is 85%–118% of the midpoint, rounded to the nearest $10; it is a planning allowance, not a statistical confidence interval. Regional factors are baseline 1.00, Northeast 1.18, West 1.12, South 0.92 and Midwest 0.90; they do not replace ZIP-code quotes.
