Project type scope drives the price

Rates are 2026 U.S. planning estimates including removal of the old tub, setting, and plumbing connections. Every metro is different — treat the result as a planning range, then get two or three quotes.

What the tub itself costs (unit only)

Acrylic$700–$1,000
Copper$2,000–$5,000
Stone resin / marble$1,500–$6,200

What moves the price most

  • Scope of work. Keeping the walls and drain location keeps it a swap; new surround or a relocated drain multiplies the labor.
  • Tub material. Fiberglass to cast iron is a $1,000+ unit jump; natural stone and copper run higher still.
  • Specialty tubs. Freestanding, jetted, and walk-in models need extra rough-in, bracing, or a GFCI circuit — $4,000–$15,000+ installed.
  • Subfloor condition. Opening an old tub recess regularly surfaces rot — the 10% contingency exists for this.
  • Regional labor rates. The same install runs −10% in the Midwest to +18% in the Northeast.

FAQ

Bathtub installation questions

How much does it cost to install a bathtub?

A like-for-like alcove replacement runs $1,620–$2,240 installed at BathCalc’s 2026 model rates. A tub-and-surround rebuild is $4,100–$5,700, and freestanding or walk-in specialty installs run $5,800–$8,000+.

How much does a walk-in tub cost to install?

$4,000–$15,000+ installed, with $6,000–$10,000 typical. The tub itself is most of the cost, plus a dedicated GFCI circuit and often a larger water heater.

How long does a bathtub installation take?

A like-for-like alcove swap takes 2–3 days; a rebuild with new surround about a week; freestanding and walk-in installs 1–2 weeks including prep.

Is it cheaper to reglaze or replace a bathtub?

Reglazing runs $300–$600 and buys 3–5 years; replacement starts around $1,600 but resets the clock 15–20 years. Reglaze to sell, replace to stay.

Do I need a permit?

Like-for-like swaps usually don't need one. Drain relocation, new circuits, or structural work does — $100–$500, typically pulled by your contractor.

What does moving a bathtub drain cost?

About $2,500 per move — the same rule of thumb as any bathroom fixture — before the new tub is even purchased.

Data

How we price these estimates

Midpoint = install base + material upgrade + selected options, then multiplied by the regional factor. Install bases are $1,900 for an alcove swap, $4,800 for a tub-and-surround rebuild, and $6,800 for a specialty tub. Material upgrades add $0, $300 or $1,200; jets add $1,500; a plumbing move adds $2,500.

These are BathCalc model assumptions, not a survey of contractor bids. The range is 85%–118% of the midpoint, rounded to the nearest $10; it is a planning allowance, not a statistical confidence interval. Regional factors are baseline 1.00, Northeast 1.18, West 1.12, South 0.92 and Midwest 0.90; they do not replace ZIP-code quotes.
