What moves the price most

  • Material tier. The tile itself runs $1–$50 per sq ft; stone and glass sit at the top of that band.
  • Wet-zone waterproofing. Backer board plus membrane adds about $3 per sq ft — non-negotiable in showers.
  • Pattern complexity. Diagonal, herringbone, and mosaic layouts add 20–50% labor hours over a straight lay.
  • Demo of old tile. Removal and haul-away adds about $2 per sq ft, plus subfloor repairs if rot shows up.
  • Regional labor rates. The same install runs −10% in the Midwest to +18% in the Northeast.

FAQ

Bathroom tile cost questions

What does bathroom tile installation cost per square foot?

$7–$30 installed for ceramic, $9–$40 for porcelain, and $15–$75 for natural stone at 2026 national averages. Typical full projects run $400–$4,250.

How much is labor versus material?

Roughly half and half: the tile itself runs $1–$50 per sq ft by material, and installation labor adds $6–$15 per sq ft before premium patterns.

How much does it cost to tile a small bathroom?

A 40 sq ft floor in ceramic runs $540–$1,510 installed. Adding a tub surround or full wet wall roughly triples the tiled area — and the price with it.

How long does bathroom tile installation take?

A floor takes 2–4 days including mortar and grout cure; walls or a shower surround add 2–3 days. Tile needs 24–72 hours before water exposure.

Do I need backer board and waterproofing?

Yes in wet zones. Cement backer board plus a waterproofing membrane is standard — that's what the wet-zone option prices. Skipping it is the most expensive $300 you'll ever save.

Should I order extra tile?

Yes — 10–15% over measured area for cuts, breakage, and dye-lot mismatches, plus a box for future repairs since dye lots sell out.

Data

How we price these estimates

Midpoint = tiled area × (installed material rate + selected per-square-foot options), then multiplied by the regional factor. Ceramic: $16/sq ft; porcelain: $20/sq ft; stone: $30/sq ft. Demolition adds $2/sq ft and waterproofing adds $3/sq ft. The comparison table excludes these two options.

These are BathCalc model assumptions, not a survey of contractor bids. The range is 85%–118% of the midpoint, rounded to the nearest $10; it is a planning allowance, not a statistical confidence interval. Regional factors are baseline 1.00, Northeast 1.18, West 1.12, South 0.92 and Midwest 0.90; they do not replace ZIP-code quotes.
